📖 How to Use Lightning Scrum Points

A quick guide to running Planning Poker sessions with your team.

🃏 What is Lightning Scrum Points?

Lightning Scrum Points is a free, real-time Planning Poker tool for Agile teams. It lets a Scrum Master run estimation sessions where each team member votes on story points simultaneously — keeping votes hidden until everyone has submitted to avoid anchoring bias.

👤 Roles
🧑‍💼 Scrum Master

Creates and manages the session. Controls when voting starts, reveals results, and accepts or overrides the final story-point value.

🙋 Participant

Joins an existing session using a 6-character code or QR code scan and submits a Fibonacci vote for each story.

🧑‍💼 For the Scrum Master
  1. Create a session — On the home page, enter the first ticket or story name in the Create a Session form and click Create Session. You'll be taken straight to your session dashboard.
  2. Invite your team — Share the 6-character Session Code or have participants scan the QR code displayed on the dashboard. You can also click "📢 Post to MS Teams" to send a branded notification card directly to your Teams channel.
  3. Add participants manually (optional) — You can type participant names directly on the dashboard before voting starts.
  4. Start voting — Once your team is ready, click Start Voting. Your personal voting screen will open in a new popup window so you can vote while monitoring the dashboard. Participants will see the voting card grid on their screens.
  5. Monitor progress — Watch the dashboard as votes come in. You'll hear the Jeopardy theme song playing (use the 🔊/🔇 button to mute/unmute) until all participants have voted.
  6. Review results — When all participants have voted, results are automatically revealed. Lightning Scrum Points calculates the average and highlights the nearest Fibonacci recommendation.
  7. Accept or override — Click Accept to use the recommended points, or enter a custom value and click Set Final Points.
  8. Estimate the next story — Enter the next ticket name and click Next Story. The session resets for a new round; completed stories are logged in the history table below.
🙋 For Participants
  1. Join a session — On the home page, enter the Session Code shared by your Scrum Master and your name, then click Join Session. Alternatively, scan the QR code to be taken directly to the voting page.
  2. Wait for voting to start — You'll see a waiting screen until the Scrum Master kicks off the round.
  3. Cast your vote — Click the card that represents your story-point estimate. Votes use the standard Fibonacci sequence: 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89.
  4. Await the reveal — Your vote is hidden from others until the Scrum Master reveals results. Once revealed, the final points decision is shown and the next story can begin.

Lightning Scrum Points uses the standard Planning Poker Fibonacci sequence:

After all votes are in, Lightning Scrum Points calculates the average and automatically recommends the nearest Fibonacci number as the story's final point value.

✨ Additional Features
📢 Microsoft Teams Integration

Share your session directly to a Teams channel! Click "📢 Post to MS Teams" on the session dashboard, enter your Teams Incoming Webhook URL, and your team will receive a branded card with a direct "Join Session" button. Your webhook URL is automatically saved for future sessions.

🎵 Audio Feedback

The Jeopardy theme song plays in a loop during active voting (Scrum Master only) to add some fun and urgency. The audio automatically stops when the last vote is submitted. Use the mute/unmute button if you prefer silence. Your preference is remembered across sessions.

🪟 Popup Voting Window

When you start voting as Scrum Master, your voting screen opens in a separate window (800x900px). This allows you to keep the dashboard visible on one screen while voting on another, making it easy to monitor team progress in real-time.

💾 Persistent Preferences

Your Teams webhook URL and audio mute preference are automatically saved to your browser's local storage. When you create future sessions, these settings are restored automatically. You can clear saved data anytime using the "Clear Saved URL" button.

💡 Tips
  • Use the QR code on the session dashboard for the fastest way to get remote team members connected.
  • Post to Teams to notify your team instantly with a branded notification card that includes a direct join link.
  • Votes are blind until revealed — participants cannot see each other's choices, keeping estimates unbiased.
  • The audio feedback adds excitement to voting. Use the mute button if you're in a quiet environment or presenting.
  • Your voting window can be resized and positioned anywhere on your screen(s) for optimal workflow.
  • The story history table at the bottom of the session page logs every completed ticket with its average, recommendation, and final points.
  • Sessions are held in-memory, so they expire when the server restarts. Plan your estimation session accordingly.
